One Year of Adrius: A Milestone Morning at HIGHfive

Family shots with the birthday cake. The backdrop is full for colourful ballons.

They say the days are long but the years are short, and witnessing Adrius turn one at HIGHfive was a beautiful reminder of that. As a father of three, I know how much weight these milestones carry—the anticipation of the "big one" and the joy of seeing your child explore the world with new eyes.

Tradition Meets Play

What made Adrius’s celebration truly special were the heartfelt traditions woven into the morning. One of the most touching segments was the Ang Ku Kueh Stepping, a Chinese tradition where the birthday boy’s feet are placed on top of two large Ang Ku Kuehs. It’s a symbolic gesture, representing the hope that he will grow up to be a man of integrity, well-grounded and steady in his path.

Following this, we moved into the Zhuazhou (Grab Test). Adrius was placed in the center of various items, each representing a different future path—a stethoscope for a doctor, a gavel for a lawyer, and a calculator for a businessman. It was a lively, fun-filled moment of anticipation as the family cheered, trying to catch a glimpse of the man he might one day become.

The Moments Between the Moments

While the traditions gave the day its structure, the real magic was in the "in-betweens":

  • The Curiosity: Adrius’s tentative reach toward the items in the grab test, his eyes wide with wonder.

  • The Family Anchor: Seeing the pride in his grandparents' eyes as they guided him through the traditional stepping ceremony.

  • Unscripted Joy: The laughter of his little friends as they took over the ball pit, a photographer’s dream for candid storytelling.

Documenting Adrius’s first birthday wasn't just about the party; it was about capturing the start of a new chapter for this beautiful family.
